Mentoring

ÁÕÀÅÉçÇø mentoring initiatives assist students with their transition to college life, support students during difficult times and provide students with academic and career guidance and advice. Mentors promote a proactive, collaborative approach to student success, through one-on-one and group mentoring opportunities.

LEAP Program—Leadership, Empowerment, Achievement, Persistence

With the help of academic advisors and faculty members from the Indian River State College LEAP program, new students develop a solid academic and social foundation. Participants learn to handle the demands and challenges of college life, to make connections with college staff and faculty, to build positive relationships with other students and to prepare for academic success at ÁÕÀÅÉçÇø or for transfer to a university upon graduation.

Monthly meetings and seminars support student growth and development and prepares students for success. Tutoring in core subjects such as English, reading and math is offered to improve academic basic skills, and fun social and cultural events and activities complement the experience.

With the help of academic advisors and faculty members from the Indian River State College,  first-year College students develop a solid academic and social foundation. Participants learn to handle the demands and challenges of college life, make connections with college staff and faculty, build positive relationships with other students and prepare for academic success at ÁÕÀÅÉçÇø or for transfer to a university upon graduation.

These activities serve to nurture well-rounded and engaged students who will prosper in every environment. Tutoring in core subjects such as English, reading and math is offered to improve academic basic skills, and complement the experience.

LEAP program goals/objectives:

  • Explore various time-management methods
  • Improve study techniques
  • Build greater awareness of college resources (e.g., connect with Health & Wellness Center services to manage stress, anxiety and receive emotional support)
  • Increase on-campus social interaction
  • Create clear goals and priorities
  • Achieve higher academic performance
  • Obtain, demonstrate and promote leadership proficiency

Men of Color

The Men of Color (MOC) program at ÁÕÀÅÉçÇø is designed to provide an inclusive and supportive space where men of color, in particular, can receive academic support and mentoring, and have the opportunity to engage in social-cultural dialogue that enhances their understanding of self and their relationship to different communities. MOC students participate in a variety of activities such as workshops, community service projects, cultural events and program initiatives designed to build character and a sense of community.

Women of Color

The ÁÕÀÅÉçÇø Women of Color program is where empowered women empower other women. The collaborative, campus-wide program is designed to assist any student who self-identifies as a woman of color make the most of her leadership potential in both the classroom and the community. The program offers educational enrichment, life-skill training and personal development opportunities and other activities. Peers and mentors provide essential support that encourages students’ successful growth and advancement at ÁÕÀÅÉçÇø, as well as help participants discover meaningful career options.
